We all know that Exotica music - the cornerstone of Tiki - owes a lot to our brethren to the south - Mexico and Latin America. In fact Latin music has always been a rich part of American popular culture from Cha Cha and Merengue to Mambo kings, Latin Jazz to Rock En Espanol. But North America's embracing of Latin music piqued in the mid-1960s with the debonnaire, Latin-styled trumpet player Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass band. It is this romanticized Mexico that we seek to celebrate this year at Tiki Oasis!
Here is a partial list of this year's acts in no particular order.
We will add others as they are confirmed. For stage time see schedule.

Jack Costanzo is a composer, conductor and drummer, but is best known as a bongo player, hence the nicknamed "Mr. Bongo". Throughout the 1940s, Costanzo worked with several Latin bands, including a revived version of the Lecuona Cuban Boys, Desi Arnaz, and Rene Touzet. He toured with Stan Kenton from 1947–48 and in the 1950s, and played with Nat King Cole from 1949 to 1953. He also played with the Billy May Orchestra, Peggy Lee, Danny Kaye, Perez Prado, Pete Rugolo, Judy Garland, Ray Anthony, Xavier Cugat, Frank Sinatra, and Tony Curtis.
He visited Havana three times in the 1940s and learned to play Afro-Cuban rhythms on the bongos and congas. Many Hollywood stars studied bongos with him, including: Marlon Brando, Rita Moreno, Tony Curtis, Betty Grable, and Gary Cooper. He has appeared in film and television such as Elvis Presley's Harum Scarum and the Johnny Staccato TV series
He retired until 1998 when he made a comeback and in 2001 recorded Back From Havana under the Ubiquity Records umbrella. This album featured the likes of Blue Note's Guilbert Castellanos, Steve Firerobing and the Panamanian singer Marilu. In 2002 he released another album with the same cast called Scorching the skins, & also mention his two most recent CDs on Ubiquity/Cubop Records "Back From Havana" & "Scorching The Skins".
Jack is currently an active musician and a living legend of Latin/Afro-Cuban jazz.

Big Sandy with Los Straightjackets No habla Ingles? No problem! Los Straitjackets team up with rockabilly belter Big Sandy to deliver vintage Rock n' Roll En Espanol. Their Rock En Espanol is inspired by Mexico City's great sixties garage and rockabilly madmen (Los Teen Tops, Los Rockin' Devils, Los Apson and many more) who took American hits and wrote new Spanish words as well as by the great border rock of Freddy Fender. They also make a nod toward east L.A. and the heart of the Spanglish universe, bridging the cultural gap across decades and the Rio Grande.
Los Straitjackets are the leading practitioners of the lost art of the guitar instrumental. Using the music of The Ventures, The Shadows, Link Wray and Dick Dale as a jumping off point, the band has taken their unique, high-energy brand of original rock & roll around the world. Clad in their trademark Lucha Libre Mexican wrestling masks, the 'Jackets have delivered their trademark guitar licks to 10 albums, thousands of concerts and dozens of films and TV shows. Mark & the Escorts were formed in 1963 initially as a surf band. By 1964, the band had expanded their musical palette to include rock & roll, r&b and British invasion music. They became a significant part of the now legendary “Eastside Sound” boom which occurred in East Los Angeles in that period, sharing the bill with other East L.A. groups including Cannibal & the Headhunters, The Premiers, The Blendells, and Thee Midniters, who all had national hit records at the time. In 1965, Mark & the Escorts recorded two singles on the GNP Crescendo label. “Get Your Baby,” the “A” side of their first recording, has been included on four different compilation CDs in recent years. The band has also been featured or mentioned in many books on the music of the 60s. In 1966, Mark & the Escorts ended when they changed their name to The Men From S.O.U.N.D., changed some band members, and moved on with the times. The three core members of Mark & the Escorts, Mark Guerrero, Rick Rosas, and Ernie Hernandez, stayed together thoughout the 1960s, eventually recording an album of Mark Guerrero songs for A&M Records in the early 70s as members of a rock band called Tango. Rick Rosas, went on to play with Joe Walsh for many years before becoming Neil Young’s bassist. Mark Guerrero, went on to record as a solo artist for Capitol Records and for legendary record producer Lou Adler on Ode Records. Mark’s songs have been recorded by artists such as Herb Alpert, Trini Lopez, Chan Romero, and his legendary late father Lalo Guerrero. He continues to perform concerts with the Mark Guerrero Band and the reunited Mark & the Escorts.

Jacques began his career as a bartender 16 years ago, working in bars and restaurants in South Africa. It was not until living in London that he grew to appreciate and love the art of bartending, eventually working his way to becoming a graduate of the prestigious BAR program in New York, directed by Paul Pacult, Steve Olsen, Dale De Groff, Dave Wondrich and Doug Frost.
Upon relocating to San Francisco in 1998, Jacques began working at the Irish Bank Bar & Restaurant where he created what many believe to be one of the most extensive Scotch Whiskey selections in the Bay area at the time. Since then, Jacques has been the opening consultant for a number of respected bars and restaurants, has served as a Brand Ambassador for Plymouth Gin, and accepted a position with Partida Tequila as their National Cocktail & Tequila Ambassador.
Under the direction of Jacques and Julio Bermejo, Tres Agaves in San Francisco won the “Spirits Restaurant of the Year” award from Sante magazine in 2006. He has been voted Best Bartender in San Francisco by Anthony Dias Blue and is a judge in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition as well as the Ultimate Spirits Competition run by Paul Pacult. IN the dark ages of Tiki, before there was internet and e-bay, a few dedicated Urban Archeologists in search of the remnants of the Tiki Cult exchanged finds and results of their expeditions, marveling at the matchbooks, postcards and Tiki mugs that had been unearthed. This loose congregation of artists, writers and animators were inspired by the Tiki cult and its icons, but no one would have ever dared to imagine it's resurrection. One of them, Bosko Hrnjak, began whittling away on wood and churning out whimsical primitive modern masks. His friends reactions were positive, and he came upon the idea to again sculpt and cast that elusive holy grail, the Tiki mug. At that point no one other than the first TIKI NEWS readers remembered what Tiki was, and the idea seemed idealistic at best. But Bosko's Tiki fever imbued his work with mana that was perceived by more and more people, and thus the first seeds for the Tiki revival were sown. I am glad to have had a formative influence on his work with my articles in Tiki News and the early version of the Book of Tiki, at that point only in the form of an unpublished mock-up, duplicated for a few close friends. Since the day Bosko fired his first mug, many more places have opened that offer carved idols and Tiki mugs, but Bosko stands out as the pioneer of the Tiki revival, being the first to have created a full line of nouveaux Tiki mugs and having designed and outfitted the first new Tiki Bar in the U.S., the Taboo Cove at the Venetian in Las Vegas. With his most recent work for the Mr. Tiki restaurant in San Diego and his new line of mugs he continues to be a trailblazer in the Tiki and modernist genre while staying true to his unique style.

His mix crosses international lines, genres and generations, weaving together a set of lounge, surf, exotica and other forms of music that all share a cohesive kinship, creating a background OR forground ambience to the marketplace and poolside activities. “DJ Lee” has retired from almost a decade of weekly DJ residencies in Los Angeles and mainly spins at monthly clubs such as The Bullet and other special events. After a decade break from playing music, he has picked up his bass and performs with the urban folk combo Dick and Jane and his old friend Skip Heller. “DJ Lee” spends his days (and sometimes nights) running Dionysus Records and Lee Joseph Publicity for the Visual Arts

Sometimes known as the Duke of Completists, and unlike most modern DJ’s who try to play many different songs, Duke, to avoid confusion only plays the same song during his sets but by different swingin artists. He is also one of the last DJ’s to work Jamaican style, spinning only on one turntable. He has been heard playing recently on Luxuria Radio playing two hours of the twist, and one time played two hours of blues songs containing the title “Chicken”, he has played live gigs featuring one-hours sets featuring tunes such as Peter Gunn, Volare, Mona Lisa, Baby Elephant Walk, Apache and a special Bar Mitzvah three -hour set of Hava Nagila. Many listeners have claimed these sets have either cured or caused a hangover. This year, just for this event, the Redundancy Lounge Hour, will be featuring two sets back to back pool side on Sunday. In honor of our theme, one hour of “ South of the Border, and a second hour, the hair of the dog set, with TEQUILA!!! Be Square, be there! When not making lists, Duke teaches LAUSD high school students with multiple handicaps the disciplines of how to run a business. They are learning how to yearn to earn by selling records on EBAY under the seller name, wetrade-e-trade. thanks!

Hailing from the City of Angels, Los Angeles, DJ Eric Musick (pronounced ‘myoo-zik’) has nearly 25 years of experience in the ancient art of the deejay. With a wide array of musical tastes, Eric lives up to his last name by employing an art of sound in time that expresses ideas and emotions in significant forms through the elements of rhythm, melody, harmony, and color. This means he knows how to play records that make you move. Ya dig? Eric cut his teeth in the gritty Mod and Acid Jazz clubs of the Los Angeles Underground back in the 80s and 90s and once served a 9 year stint at West L.A.’s very own Liquid Kitty. Living in L.A. has its advantages as he frequently deejays private and corporate parties for the music, film and Adult industries. Eric, aka Mr. Soul Satisfaction, still holds true to his roots by spinning records at various Mod/Soul/Reggae clubs throughout L.A. and Hollywood. You can catch Mr. Soul Satisfaction on his own podcast dedicated to obscure 60s Soul, Funk, Jazz and Reggae sounds at SoulDeepRadio.com. Or, if you’re into the exotic sounds of the 50s and 60s, Eric also podcasts his own concoction of tribal rhythms at RitualoftheSavage.com.

Born in the jungles of the Yucatan and raised by a hidden sect of Mayan priests, Señor Hughez began collecting rare vinyl after finding a collection of records ensnared is his fishing nets in Ensenada which were believed to have come from the wreckage of the famous lost cruise ship that disappeared in 1962, the S.S. Bergeron.
Though a gringo, Don Jack has been well seasoned in the rays of the Baja sun, once surviving for 40 days in the vast Sonoran Desert on nothing but fermented cactus juice.
His track selection for this year promises to be a caliente cocktail of luscious Latin música.

Switched On Audrey starting record collecting at age 8 when she received her first LP, The Beatles 1962-1966, which was given to her by her aunt. Ten years later she met Bomp Records' garage guru Greg Shaw and became fixated on '60s punk, British R&B, and psychedelic music. Soon after, she began spinning at the "Rave Up!" and then "Cavern Club" in Hollywood. It was there she met Domenic Priore and co-produced/wrote/and starred in It's Happening!, a '60s-styled go-go show in the style of Shindig and Ready Steady Go! After the show’s six-year run, she moved to Europe where she became the resident DJ of the UP Club! in Frankfurt.
While in Rome, she helped organize the Danger!Diabolik, which featured a display of her sizeable Diabolik movie-poster collection. Audrey doesn't stop at collecting records and memorabilia; she has a huge vintage clothing collection focusing on designer Rudi Gernreich, whom she hopes to open a museum for one day. After returning to California, she began producing another TV show, The Now Sound, featuring contemporary bands such as The Masonics, Peter, Bjorn, and John and The Soundtrack of Our Lives. Among Audrey’s most favorite things to do is DJ, but by far the most exciting was when director Roman Coppola asked her to spin at the premiere of his movie CQ at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood. At Luxuria she hosts Pretty World, a Brazilian-based musical tour that mixes up the best Bossa Nova, Samba, Tropicalia, Jazz and other Latin delicacies—including any version of “Summertime” she can find.

When Gaylord was a wee child in 1960s New York, he anticipated one aspect of his impending adulthood: He couldn't wait to be enveloped by all the mid-century music the grownups around him enjoyed. When, upon his reaching maturity, the musical trends of the times unveiled a different and less swanky plan, it dismayed him none. He realized he could become a cultural minister of the recorded disc and provide his own soundtrack to gracious living.
Although Gaylord has hosted an eclectic radio program on Jersey City, NJ freeform station WFMU for the past 19 years, as a denizen of the demimonde his nightclub DJ stints take on different shadings. In the 1990s he regaled the cognoscenti in the Manhattan nightspot Bar d'O with an array of lounge/exotica/easy-listening/bossa nova/go-go sounds for the In Hi-Fi music nights, and he entered the 21st century as one of the rotating guest DJs for Quiet City: Radio in Hi-Fi on LuxuriaMusic.com. In recent months he brought forth 1950s soundtracks, crime jazz and his beloved exotica for the enjoyment of the well-appointed patrons at Salon: The Lounge at the Edison Ballroom. Equally adept in the disc disciplines of '60s soul, twist, surf, beat and girl group tunes, Gaylord Fields will once again be schlepping 50 pounds of vinyl from the East Coast to Tiki Oasis, much to the delight of both you the listener and his chiropractor.
